Ghana is Moving!
GhanaMoves, een team van vier MSc-studenten Industrieel Ontwerpen aan de TU Delft, heeft zich, in het kader van een studieproject, gedurende 3 maanden ingezet om de situatie van gehandicapten in Ghana te verbeteren. In samenwerking met Movendi Foundation is contact gelegd met een lokale producent van rolstoelen en tricycles. Dit metaalbedrijf, MAK-D, heeft te maken heeft met een afnemende productie, door een tekort aan financixebn. Mede daarom was het doel vanuit de studie om de bedrijfssituatie van MAK-D structureel te verbeteren, zodat er een meer duurzaam project gerealiseerd kon worden. Een nieuw product zou hieraan moeten kunnen bijdragen. Daarom is een geheel productontwikkelingsproces gestart, beginnend bij een strategisch onderzoek, van productontwikkeling tot markt-implementatie.
Een interne analyse van het bedrijf MAK-D en een externe analyse van MAK-Dx92s directe concurrenten en trends in de Ghanese samenleving resulteerde in enkele opvallende uitgangspunten. Zo bleek MAK-D in zijn directe omgeving, die vooral gekenmerkt wordt door imitatie en kopieergedrag, het competitief voordeel te hebben in het maken van producten met wielen, zoals goederen- en bakfietsen en mobiliteitshulpmiddelen voor gehandicapten.
Daarnaast bleek uit de externe analyse dat de zorg voor gehandicapte kinderen redelijk wordt verzorgd door instanties zoals het Liliane fonds, maar dat het daadwerkelijke probleem ontstaat waarneer deze kinderen aan het werk moeten. Vanwege slechte voorzieningen voor gehandicapten en valse vooroordelen van werkgevers is er geen werk, waardoor veel gehandicapten bedelend op straat belanden.
Een andere zeer opvallende trend is de levendigheid van de straathandel in Ghana, het grootste deel van de Ghanese bevolking vind zijn beroep in het verkopen van producten op straat. Er zou een kans voor MAK-D liggen in de ontwikkeling van handelskarretjes, ware het niet dat veel van deze handelaren individuen zijn, en MAK-D de distributiekanalen mist om dit soort producten aan deze potentixeble klanten te leveren
Echter, al deze feiten samen levert wel een andere unieke kans op voor MAK-D: Wanneer hij in staat is om een product te ontwikkelen dat de gehandicapten de kans biedt om deel te nemen aan de straathandel wordt een sociaal probleem opgelost. Daarnaast wordt de mogelijkheid gecrexeberd om een externe, grote financier aan te spreken, zoals een bedrijf of NGO. Bovendien, als dit een product met wielen is, zal MAK-D een product maken dat nog niet bestaat en moeilijk te imiteren is door zijn concurrenten.
Het Ontwerpteam heeft een product ontwikkeld dat aan bovenstaande eisen voldoet; na het generen van vele ideexebn en deze uitgewerkt te hebben tot werkbare concepten zijn twee uiteindelijke prototypes gemaakt en getest. Het meest bruikbare concept is verder ontwikkeld en getest met de doelgroep: gehandicapten van x93the Ghana Society of Phyically Disabledx94 . Zowel de gehandicapten als de omstanders reageerden positief: de gehandicapten waren blij uiteindelijk werk te kunnen doen die hun niet-gehandicapte vrienden ook deden en de omstanders kochten daadwerkelijk producten en prezen het initiatief om het bedelen een halt toe te roepen.
Dit gaf het signaal dat het product echt marktwaardig was en daadwerkelijk gexefmplementeerd zou kunnen worden. Er zou zelfs een bedrijf aan gekoppeld kunnen worden dat zijn producten met deze manier van straathandel aan de man brengt. Na een week lang bedrijfspresentaties bij meerdere multinationals te hebben gegeven besloot xe9xe9n bedrijf, FanMilk een ijsfabrikant en de lokale marktleider in straathandel, het idee daadwerkelijk te adopteren. Ook voor hen levert dit voordelen: naast het verkrijgen van een x93social corporate imagex94 hebben ze tegelijkertijd een nieuw distributiekanaal verkregen om hun ijs te verkopen.
Speciaal voor dit bedrijf zijn 3 extra modellen gemaakt. Vanaf 1 juli zal een pilot-project worden opgestart waarin 3 gehandicapten daadwerkelijk ijs op straat verkopen, iets dat hopelijk zal resulteren in een goede ijsomzet voor FanMilk, een nieuwe order voor MAK-D en nog meer gehandicapten die de kans krijgen om een respectvolle baan uit te oefenen!
